June is national Pet Preparedness Month, the
perfect time to create an emergency kit that includes supplies you’ll need if
you ever have to evacuate with your pets during a natural disaster or other
emergency. By keeping a carrier, a first aid kit, and day-to-day necessities in
one place, you’ll be prepared for anything that comes your way.
Your pet’s emergency kit should include extra
food, medications, veterinary records, travel bowls, a first aid kit, and a
stash of bottled water. You’ll also want to include an extra harness, leash,
and carrier so you can easily transport your pet at a moment’s notice.
It’s also a good time to make sure your pet
has a collar tag with your up-to-date contact information, as well as a
microchip that can be used to identify them even if they get lost while they
are not wearing their collar.
Most pet parents can’t imagine leaving their pets behind in a natural disaster, but don’t actually have a plan to keep that from happening. Make sure to take the time to find out which hotels and emergency shelters around you are pet-friendly so you’ll know exactly where to go if your family has to evacuate.
